Fall crop insurance deadline nears
Winter wheat, barley and forage producers in Illinois have until September 30 to sign up for federally subsidized crop insurance.
Illinois farmers were paid nearly $140 million in crop insurance indemnities for last year’s crop losses. Nationwide, crop insurance paid out more than $4 billion for losses suffered in 2002. For the first time, crop insurance surpassed federal disaster programs to become the largest part of the nation’s safety net for farmers.
Wheat, barley and forage production can be insured with the traditional Multiple Peril Crop Insurance (MPCI). Winter wheat can also be insured with Crop Revenue Coverage (CRC), and Group Risk Plan (GRP).
Not all crops, or all types of policies are available in every county. To learn more and to sign up for crop insurance, or to make any changes to existing policies, producers must contact a private crop insurance agent before the September 30 deadline.
