First drought and now Katrina have farmers thinking about crop insurance

Fall crop insurance deadline nears

 

OVERLAND PARK , KAN. -----The severe drought in several Midwest states followed by the rain, wind, and floods of Hurricane Katrina are sure to generate thousands of claims on federally subsidized crop insurance policies.

 

Those disasters are also causing farmers with fall planted crops, like winter wheat, barley, and forage, to reconsider just how much crop insurance they need.  For most of the country, September 30 is the deadline for signing up for fall planted crops.  It is also the deadline to make any changes to existing policies.

 

The crop insurance industry has already applied for expedited claims servicing procedures in the wake of Katrina.  Similar procedures last year, allowed crop insurance companies to quickly respond to hurricane damaged crops in Florida .

 

Producers who do have damage should call their crop insurance agent as soon as possible.  The crop insurance companies usually respond to disasters by pulling claims adjusters from around the country.

 

If they have damage, producers should not destroy any part of the crop until they have been given permission by a representative of their crop insurance company.

 

The good news is that thousands of producers in the drought area and the hurricane path, did sign up for crop insurance and there are millions of dollars of liability in force, waiting to go to work in rural communities.

 

Any producer with fall planted crops should call his crop insurance agent before the deadline to sign up, or to make changes to existing policies.
