Crop Insurance Industry Responds to Hurricane Rita

OVERLAND PARK, KS – Two days after the storm hit came photographs of flooded sugar cane fields and news from the rural communities that were hardest hit by

Hurricane Rita. One day after the storm, even before the photographs and news stories, the crop insurance industry and the Risk Management Agency were already meeting to make sure that expedited claims processes would be in place.

“As soon as services are restored, and we won’t be in the way, crop insurance claims adjusters will be working hard to make sure all insured crops that were damaged by the storm will have claims processed quickly,” said Bob Parkerson, President of National Crop Insurance Services in Kansas City. NCIS is the trade association for the crop insurance industry.

“We want to make sure that crop insurance indemnities are quickly put to work to help restore rural communities that were in Rita’s path,” he said.

Parkerson, who met with RMA manager, Ross Davidson, wanted to make sure that the partnership between RMA and the crop insurance industry was working smoothly in the face of a major crisis.

The same efforts were organized immediately after Hurricane Katrina.

“We had experience with this kind of emergency last year when four hurricanes hit Florida,” said Parkerson adding, “We just want producers to know that crop insurance claims are going to go smoothly and quickly.”
