Crop insurance deadline nears

OVERLAND PARK, Kan.---For most of the country, except for the deep south, producers of insurable spring planted crops have only until March 15 to sign up for federally subsidized crop insurance. This is also the deadline for making any changes to existing policies.

Corn, soybeans, wheat, barley, grain sorghum, oats, potatoes, sugar beets, safflower, millet and beans are just a few of the crops sharing the March 15 deadline.

Many producers may be thinking about the upcoming hurricane season, or the probability of drought, as they evaluate their crop insurance options. They may also be thinking about how trade negotiations will affect government programs. Crop insurance subsidies are nearly completely in the “green box” in those negotiations and are protected from whatever the results of international agreements.

Not every crop is insurable in every state or county. Producers wanting to sign up for crop insurance, or those who wish to make changes to their existing policies must contact a crop insurance agent before the March 15 deadline.
